Do Absolutes Exist?

Something exists. Surely it must.

Look at your hands. How do you deny them? As Descartes said, “I think, therefore I am”. The indubitable Cogito. We can even stretch that further and say I Am, therefore I think.

Being is prior.

So in the context of our question, and our previous establishment that surely something must exist, we can infer that any Absolute is that which necessarily must exist for all else to exist.

Interestingly, that brings us back to our “meta-cogito”, if you will. If we really ask ourselves the question, what must necessarily exist, Absolutely exist, in order to make sense of anything at all, then we get to the heart of it. I Am, therefore I think.

Or even more simply, as the ancients realized: I Am.

The ultimate tautology. The infinite regress of the Self.
